First Level Master’s Degree

QDU Diploma

Software Certificates

The Master’s Degree in Yacht Design offers a comprehensive education on designing boats: from water lines to interior furnishing, from minute details to all the necessary components to realize the project. Lessons also deal with the specific legislation and product analysis.

Created in 1997 and updated every year, the Master’s is now at its fifteenth edition, and is sponsored by the Italian National Council of Architects, Planners, Landscapers and Conservators.

WHO IS IT FOR

The Master’s is aimed at graduates and near-graduates from first and second level university courses in engineering and architecture; it’s also suitable for designers, professionals and experts of the field with basic design knowledge and basic CAD modeling skills. The prospective student has an interest in design for the nautical leisure industry in its every aspect, from initial idea to production.

EDUCATIONAL GOALS
Conceiving, planning and designing a boat must take into account all aspects of its construction. The Master’s seeks to ensure the achievement of this objective. The course deals with topics such as: proper load distribution and internal functional distribution; effective use of CAD tools; choosing the most suitable design method to construct surfaces suitable for CAM transfer for the milling of parts; designing the hydrostatic and hydrodynamic characteristics by taking into account the buoyancy of the craft, the applicable strengths and the study of which one might be the most efficient crew (in the case of sailing vessels). The Master’s classes also include project management and industrial reproducibility, how to safeguard a design idea, and elements of environmental conservationism of the sea.

The students will learn about the various kinds of boats and about the recent evolution of the pleasure craft market (classifications, terminology, standards). They will also familiarize themselves with this specific market’s features, with the main production facilities, and with the materials and techniques currently used. As far as 3D design is concerned, the basic software to know is AutoCAD, but the student will mostly use Rhinoceros.

The Master’s will also focus on the organic techniques of automotive design.
